What Makes an Angrakha

An angrakha is recognised by its wrap. One front panel crosses over the other and fastens at the side of the chest or waist with fabric cords called dori, usually finished with tassels. The overlap creates an asymmetric V-neckline and a diagonal line that runs across the bodice rather than straight down it.

The under-panel is secured on the inside. How far the outer panel crosses decides the depth of the V, so bridal angrakhas often carry an inner layer beneath the neckline for extra coverage. On many bridal pieces the dori is decorative, and the outfit actually closes with hooks or a concealed zip so the wrap does not shift over a long day. The name is generally traced to the Sanskrit angarakshaka, meaning body protector. It began as a men’s garment at the Mughal, Awadh and Rajput courts and is now one of the more distinctive silhouettes a Pakistani bride can choose.

Lengths and What Goes Underneath

• Hip to knee: worn over a lehenga or gharara. A shorter angrakha shows more of the bottom, so the lehenga or gharara usually carries as much embroidery as the top.
• Calf length: the traditional proportion, flared through kalis and worn over a lehenga or churidar.
• Floor length: a gown-like cut close to a pishwas, suited to a formal Walima.

Angrakha, Pishwas or Anarkali?

All three can flare into a full skirt, so from across a room they look alike. The bodice is what separates them. A pishwas or Anarkali has a symmetrical, fitted front, usually with a high waist seam. An angrakha wraps across and ties at the side. If you want a clean, symmetrical neckline, start with a pishwas. If you want the neckline to do some of the decorative work, choose the angrakha.

Styling the Wrap for Each Event

The overlap already frames the neck, so a heavy choker or rani haar tends to compete with it. Statement earrings, a maang tikka and one fine necklace usually sit better. Drape the dupatta over the shoulder opposite the tie, or pin it at the head and let it fall behind, so the knot and tassels stay visible.

For the Mehndi, yellow, green or hot pink suit the mood of the evening. For your Nikkah outfit, white, ivory or soft pink with a higher overlap and full sleeves gives a covered look without losing the wrap line. Baraat dresses lean towards deep red or maroon, and an angrakha for the day is usually worn over a heavily worked lehenga or gharara. For the Walima, a floor-length angrakha in a lighter shade, with fuller work along the wrap border, stays formal without repeating the Baraat.
