Islamic Bridal Gowns

An Islamic bridal gown gives a Muslim bride the one-piece ease and the train of a Western wedding gown, in a cut she can wear with a hijab. The sleeves reach the wrist, the neckline is high or filled in, and the skirt falls from the waist as a ball gown or A-line instead of following the hips. It suits the nikkah, the walima or a single celebration that combines both. Every gown is made to your measurements, and sleeves, neckline and coverage can be adjusted before production where technically possible. For modest ghararas, pishwas and lehengas too, see our Islamic wedding dresses.

Islamic Bridal Gown Silhouettes

  • Ball gown: a fitted bodice over a full skirt from the waist; the most covering silhouette and the most traditional bridal look.
  • A-line: a gradual flare from the waist that skims the hips; lighter to wear and easy to move in.
  • Princess cut: seams running from shoulder to hem give shape without a waist seam, which keeps the line long and clean under a hijab.

A mermaid or fishtail gown takes the opposite approach and fits closely to the knee, so brides who like its flare but want more coverage usually choose a trumpet or A-line cut instead.

Sleeves and Necklines That Work with a Hijab

A hijab sits most cleanly over a high, round or funnel neckline, or over a sweetheart or V-neck filled in with a lined illusion panel. Full sleeves come in several shapes: fitted to the wrist with a small cuff, softly gathered bishop sleeves, or sheer sleeves with a lining underneath. Buttoned cuffs and a row of covered buttons down the back are classic finishing details. Very wide bell sleeves are best avoided if you will be holding a bouquet or signing the nikkah nama, because they tend to get in the way.

Matching the Gown, Hijab and Veil

Bridal white comes in several shades: bright white, ivory, off-white and champagne. Match your hijab to the gown itself rather than to a generic white, or choose a nude or blush tone that separates the two cleanly. A veil pinned over the hijab can be fingertip, chapel or cathedral length; the longer it is, the more it becomes part of the train. A light tiara or a jewelled pin can sit over the hijab in place of a tikka, and for a South Asian finish a bordered net dupatta can replace the veil altogether.

One Gown for the Nikkah and Walima

Some brides wear the same gown for both days and change the look with accessories: a veil and simple jewellery for the nikkah, then a jewelled belt, statement earrings and a lighter hijab style for the walima. If you would rather have two different looks, our walima bridal dresses offer softer colours for the second day, and the full bridal gown range shows every other silhouette.
